# 10. Program SCIEDIT

## 10.1 Purpose

Program SCIEDIT (Synergistic Consultants Incorporated EDIT program) is used for text entry and editing. It is the SCIOS text editor, ideal for entering and modifying text files and format files.

## 10.2 Execution

```
>>? RUN SCIEDIT
? [+input fn] [+output fn]
? [+input fn] [+output fn] {"initial text"}
? [input fn] [output fn] {"initial text"} {X}
```

Where:
- `+` before a filename defines it if it does not exist
- **Input file** -- contains information to be acted on (contents remain unchanged)
- **Output file** -- receives the edited contents
- **Initial text** (optional) -- rapidly find a line deeply embedded in the input file by specifying its first few unique characters
- **X** (optional fourth word) -- skip lines preceding the initial text instead of copying them to the output file

## 10.3 Operation

1. The first 20 lines of the input file are displayed on screen.
2. Edit using the full capabilities of the keyboard.
3. Press F5 to save the screen contents to the output file.
4. The next 20 lines appear for editing.
5. This continues, 20 lines at a time, until editing is complete.

The input file remains unaltered on disk. Only the output file contains the edited content.

Lines that move off the bottom or top of the screen during editing are not lost -- use PgDn or PgUp to return them.
